CHUPACABRAS STRIKES AGAIN IN PUERTO RICO
New reports surfaced during May in Puerto Rico of strange animal killings that locals attributed to the dreaded Chupacabras. Several ranchers said they had seen the creature face to face, saying it looked like "a big-headed gray monster" and appeared to levitate off the ground.

DNA SAMPLE FROM ABDUCTION CASE RAISES BIG QUESTIONS
Australian researcher Bill Chalker has reported what may be the world's first DNA test of abduction-related biological material. Australian abductee Peter Khoury had a strange encounter with two female beings in 1992, after which he recovered an odd strand of hair which was later DNA tested. The intriguing results raise many questions about the physical nature of abduction and illustrate the need for more intensive scientific research on this worldwide mystery. The full case report was published in the Spring 1999 International UFO Reporter by the J. Allen Hynek Center for UFO Studies (CUFOS).
CATTLE MUTILATIONS HAUNT RANCH IN NEW MEXICO
The Albuquerque Journal newspaper of June 9 reported that the Tres Ritos ranch north of Questa, New Mexico had been the scene of three separate cattle mutilation incidents during the month of May. Rancher Tom Reed had seen mutilations in previous years as well. As to who's doing it, he says, "If the government isn't involved, I think they're covering it up."
STRANGE LIGHT SAID TO CREATE CROP CIRCLES IN HOLLAND
Researcher Linda Moulton Howe reported that a strange pink-purple light, observed by a young man in Holland, may have been directly responsible for the formation of two crop circles found in a field behind the man's home on June 7.
DISC-SHAPED UFO SIGHTED IN NEW JERSEY
On June 7, Ron De Baecke of Trenton, NJ reportedly saw "a huge disc shaped UFO hovering in the sky." According to investigator George Filer, De Baecke "is a retired Army aircraft mechanic and has worked around aircraft most of his life." De Baecke and his wife were driving when they saw the UFO, which "appeared to be solid and manufactured, with a shiny metal surface. There were no lights visible on the craft." Both witnesses said the UFO was "huge."
PRIMITIVE BACTERIA GROW WELL IN MARS CONDITIONS
Scientist Timothy A. Kral of the University of Arkansas, reporting at a national meeting of the American Society for Microbiology on June 2, said he had successfully grown a primitive type of bacteria in conditions simulating those of Mars. The bacteria, known as methanogens, thrive on Earth deep underground or at the bottom of the sea in conditions that would kill most other forms of life.
NEW SUPER-HEAVY ELEMENTS 116, 118 CREATED
Researchers at Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory in California say they have created several atoms of element 118, which decayed within milliseconds to element 116, another previously undiscovered element. That atom then decayed to element 114 and kept decaying down to at least element 106. Despite their swift decay, these new superheavy elements strengthened the notion of an as-yet unachieved "island of stability." A theoretically stable isotope of element 114 might contain 184 neutrons, several more than the isotopes so far created.

WORLDWIDE UFO WATCH INSPIRES GLOBAL COOPERATION
In the first known attempt to coordinate a night of UFO skywatching across the entire world, organizer Diana Botsford of the MSN (Microsoft Network) UFO Community said people from 51 countries took part and about 125 separate sightings were reported during the Worldwide Watch June 26-27. Botsford said more sightings might have been reported had much of the world not been under cloud cover that night.
DAZZLING UFO REPORTED BY SEVERAL IDAHO WITNESSES
A mother and her son reported seeing an intensely bright object fly eastward over their cabin near Lava Hot Springs, southeastern Idaho, on the night of June 20. Half a mile away, a retired Air Force pilot saw the same object from a different perspective. All the witnesses filed reports with the National UFO Reporting Center. Pilot Owen Mitchell said the object was so bright "you could hardly look at it." But he's sure he saw it traveling west, apparently ruling out a fireball meteor.
GIANT CROP FORMATION AT ALTON BARNES, ENGLAND
Crop formations were reported almost every day during the month of June in the fields of southern England. By far the largest so far this year was found on June 12 in East Field, Alton Barnes, Wiltshire. Measuring 1,024 feet in length, the formation consisted of seven elaborate sections strung along a straight axis.
NUMEROUS UFO SIGHTINGS REPORTED IN CHILE
On May 23, the flight crew and several passengers aboard a Chilean airliner observed a UFO for about 30 minutes. The UFO reportedly was also visible to control tower personnel at the Puerto Natales airport in southern Chile. On June 12 in the town of El Fiscal, central Chile, some 60 witnesses watched a "pear-shaped" UFO as it moved slowly overhead for about one hour. On the evening of June 20, a married couple living near the city of Cochrane saw five luminous objects fly over their house. Chile has been one of the world's most active UFO hotspots in recent years.
HUGE UFO REPORTED OVER BRAZIL AND NEARBY COUNTRIES
The Brazilian newspaper Not Cias Populares reported that a huge UFO was seen over much of Brazil and several other countries during the evening of June 14 and morning of June 15. One witness, an accountant, said the UFO was shaped like a "pot cover" and had many lights and a reddish glow. He watched it for about three minutes as it disappeared in the distance.
ORANGE ORBS REPORTED IN AUSTRALIA
On June 11, a total of six orange glowing orbs were sighted in four separate incidents in the vicinity of Grafton, in the northeastern corner of New South Wales, Australia. One witness captured several orbs on video.
UFOS CAUGHT ON VIDEO OVER PUEBLA, MEXICO
Three UFOs were filmed in broad daylight by a Mexican television crew over the city of Puebla, southeast of Mexico City, on June 1. The video, broadcast on Mexico's "Atsteka" TV, showed three UFOs hanging over the city for about five minutes.

EX-NASA WORKER SAYS SPACE AGENCY KNOWS ABOUT UFOs
Clark C. McClelland says that for more than three decades he worked at NASA's launch facilities at Cape Canaveral and the Kennedy Space Center in Florida. During that time, he says he saw plenty of evidence that NASA officials and employees were exposed to unexplainable and sometimes quite alarming UFO events.
CLASSIC DAYLIGHT DISC REPORTED IN AUSTRALIA
On the morning of July 14, in the town of Bundaberg on Australia's east coast, a witness reportedly saw a domed disc-like craft in the sky. The object appeared to slowly pulsate from dim to extremely bright. It was in view for 3 to 4 minutes before slowly moving away and then abruptly disappearing.
ANOTHER UFO SIGHTED IN NORTHERN OHIO
Ohio has been the scene of many UFO reports during 1999. The latest, reportedly seen the night of July 7, was described by the main witness as round metallic object in the sky near the town of Clyde. The object was in view for some 45 minutes, and through binoculars it appeared to have "five or six lights or windows." The sighting was reported to the Sandusky County Sheriff's office.
UFO SIGHTINGS CONTINUE IN BRAZIL
Brazilian media reported UFO incidents that occurred on July 3 and July 7. In the first, a bluish glowing object was captured on video by a witness in northeastern Brazil, near Natal. In the second, three residents of Bela Island called police after reportedly seeing two unusual objects flying toward them from the ocean. The objects looed like flattened cigars about 20 meters in length and "metallic yellow" in color.
UFO CULT REPORTED MISSING IN COLOMBIA
In Cartagena, Colombia, at least 60 members of a religious cult were reported missing on July 8. Relatives worried about a possible mass suicide similar to that of the infamous "Heaven's Gate" group in 1997 because the group, known as the Stella Maris Gnostic church, was said to believe that a UFO would rescue them from the coming destruction of the world. They were thought to have gone on a pilgrimage into the rugged Sierra Nevada mountains of northern Colombia.
LAS VEGAS DEVELOPER TURNS SPACE TYCOON
Robert Bigelow, the millionaire Las Vegas real estate developer whose interests include parapsychology and UFO research, now wants to build hotels in space and fly people to the moon. To do these things, he has founded a new company called Bigelow Aerospace.
ABDUCTEE PHILLIP KRAPF OFFERS NEW REVELATIONS
Former Los Angeles Times news editor Phillip H. Krapf, who told his own abduction story in the 1998 book "The Contact Has Begun", recently revealed new information from his alleged alien source. Among his revelations: There will be no major disruptions due to Y2K, at least in the USA; there will be no Armageddon, Apocalypse or Second Coming with the advent of the new millennium; and the phenomenon of cattle mutilation is entirely caused by humans. But Krapf himself isn't sure if his source is telling the truth.

FRENCH REPORT ON UFOS AND DEFENSE: AN OVERVIEW
In one of the biggest UFO developments in recent memory, a committee of high ranking French military officers and scientists, self-identified as "COMETA," published a 92 page report stating that UFOs are physically real, some UFOs may be extraterrestrial technology, and UFOs pose a major challenge to international security and deserve cooperative international study. Though widely distributed in France, by year's end the COMETA report had not appeared in English translation, nor been discussed in any mainstream news media outside France.
UFO VIDEOTAPED DURING LIVE NEWSCAST IN MEXICO
On July 7, an unidentified aerial object was caught on videotape by a news cameraman during a live news broadcast in Monterrey, Nuevo Leon, Mexico. The morning newscast of TV Azteca was interrupted for five minutes to discuss the live UFO event. Though distant, the object appeared disc-shaped and possibly metallic. It was mostly motionless, but sometimes moved left and right. [Months later, this UFO was reportedly explained as a large advertising balloon.]
UFO ABDUCTS PIG IN BRAZILIAN STATE OF ACRE
Peasants from Sena Madureira in the Brazilian State of Acre reported the abduction of a pig by a UFO. Witnesses said a bright light shaped somewhat like a Volkswagen Beetle hovered over the town on the night of July 12. More than 50 people said they saw a pig being levitated into the air toward the light, according to a local police commander.
CANADA'S FIRST 1999 CROP FORMATIONS ON INDIAN LAND
Two crop formations were discovered in separate fields on the Six Nations Reserve, a Native Indian reservation at New Credit near the town of Hagersville, Ontario, in early July. The larger one is the largest and most elaborate yet seen in Canada, according to Paul Anderson of Circles Phenomenon Research.
TOP AIRCRAFT DESIGNER REPORTEDLY CONFIRMED ROSWELL
Prior to his recent death, John Andrews, former Lockheed engineer and Chief model designer for the Testor Corporation, revealed to researcher Bill McDonald information said to have come from former Lockheed "Skunk Works" CEO Ben Rich. According to McDonald, Rich told Andrews that "there are two types of UFOs -- the ones we build, and ones THEY build. We learned from both crash retrievals and actual 'hand-me-downs.'" Design features of a craft recovered in 1947 near Roswell were incorporated in America's most advanced military aircraft, Rich reportedly said.

AUTHENTICITY OF ALLEGED MJ-12 DOCUMENTS IN DOUBT
Numerous new documents purporting to chronicle the activities of a super-secret organization called MJ-12 came to light last year, stoking the long-running MJ-12 controversy. But leading MJ-12 researcher Stanton Friedman says he has grave doubts about the authenticity of many of the newer documents. One reason: document source Timothy Cooper flunked a lie detector test. But researchers Robert and Ryan Wood continue to defend the documents as probably authentic.
HUGE SILENT TRIANGLE SEEN IN QUEENSLAND, AUSTRALIA
Two women, aged 39 and 59, reported seeing a huge triangular object fly by as they fished near Morton Bay, Queensland, on the night of Aug 8. It moved very slowly, "nothing like a plane," and had seven brilliant red pulsating lights along its triangular perimeter, they said.
DR. LEIR'S NEW ORGANIZATION TO STUDY ABDUCTIONS
California-based podiatrist and abduction researcher Dr. Roger Leir announced the launch of a new organization, Aliens and the Scalpel Research, to conduct medical studies of the abduction phenomenon. Leir's 1998 book "The Aliens and the Scalpel" (1998) described surgical removal of possible "alien implants".

LAWYER SUES GOV'T FOR PROTECTION FROM ET INVADERS
Arizona-based attorney Peter Gersten, director of Citizens Against UFO Secrecy (CAUS), announced on September 1 that he has filed suit in federal court in an effort to force the U.S. government and the government of Arizona to protect citizens from dangers posed by extraterrestrial invaders.
PENNSYLVANIA BECOMES UFO HOT-SPOT IN LATE SUMMER
Veteran Pennsylvania UFO researcher Stan Gordon investigated two daylight UFO sightings, both on August 16, the first involving an apparent disc-shaped object near Reading in Berks County, and the other involving a strange dumbell-shaped object which was observed maneuvering in the sky north of Pittsburgh. On the night of Aug 18, a couple driving near Nineveh, Pennsylvania, saw what appeared to be two dark triangular UFOs hanging motionless side by side only 100 feet in the air. They reported the sighting to the National UFO Reporting Center.
GLOWING ORBS WOW WITNESSES IN SOUTHERN AUSTRALIA
At least four adult witnesses saw a string of three yellow-white glowing orbs move through the sky and do a series of formation maneuvers on the night of Aug 14 near Melbourne. At their largest, the orbs were about one-sixth the size of the moon. The orbs "were unquestionably in control or under control," the witnesses said.
TRIANGULAR UFO REPORTED IN SAO PAULO, BRAZIL
Workers at a water treatment station in Cubatao, Sao Paulo state, witnessed a large triangle-shaped UFO at around midnight on Aug 21. The UFO had a red light above and three red lights below at the corners. Witness Roberto Rabelo said it appeared to be "bigger than a soccer field." Shortly before disappearing, the object displayed "hundreds of white flashes."
JAPAN JET PURSUES UNIDENTIFIED CRAFT, DISAPPEARS
The Associated Press reported on August 15 that a jet fighter of the Japanese Defense Agency was sent aloft to intercept an unidentified aircraft spotted on radar off Japan's southern coast, but was later reported missing. Two crewmen aboard the F-4EJ Phantom jet were unaccounted for. No details were released concerning the possible origin or nature of the unidentified aircraft that the F-4 jet was pursuing.
RESEARCHERS TEST CROP CIRCLES FOR AUTHENTICITY
Two separate teams of U.S.-based researchers worked the crop fields of England this summer attempting to determine whether crop circle formations are solely the result of human hoaxers. Using different methods, the two teams drew similar conclusions: many formations are hoaxed, but some seem the result of a more mysterious force. Nancy Talbott of BLT Research focused on "expulsion cavities", small holes in the nodes of crop stalks she says are indicative of some energetic force acting on the crop The other team used instruments to test for residual magnetic and electrostatic energies in the formations.
MAJOR UFO EVENT IN MONTERREY, MEXICO -- AGAIN
At about 7 pm on September 12, a UFO was filmed by a Monterrey TV news crew and was witnessed by commercial airplanes and air traffic controllers as well as many ground observers. The object looked V-shaped but also changed shape as if rotating. It was visible for an hour before moving south toward the Sierra Madre area and was a hot topic in the next day's news programs.
UFO SIGHTING AND POSSIBLE ABDUCTION IN VIRGINIA
A woman sitting in her car near an abandoned military base in Virginia in the early morning of June 28 reportedly saw an egg-shaped object "the color of blue Kool-Aid" that moved toward her and then hovered over a field about 200 yards away. She then observed three "little guys" coming toward her. Her next memory is of waking up at 6 am, "crying and shaking like crazy." The case, involving apparent missing time, is being investigated by Richard Lang of Virgina MUFON.
MANY SIGHTINGS OF STRANGE LIGHTS SINCE TURKEY QUAKE
A spokesman for the Turkish UFO and Paranormal Organization says that ever since the devastating earthquake that hit Turkey on Aug 17, "strange lights are seen all over Western Turkey. They are incredibly clear, circular or triangular in shape, white, yellow, red and blue colored, remain visible in the sky for 5 to 20 minutes, following a materializing-dematerializing pattern. It has become a routine thing, as they have been showing up twice or three times a week recently. They have become an inevitable component of the TV news and media."
SPIRAL CROP FORMATION FOUND IN CANADA
On Sept 5, Paul Anderson of Circles Phenomenon Research Canada announced that a crop formation consisting of eleven circles arranged in a three-armed spiral around a large center circle had been located in the small farming community of Neilburg, Saskatchewan, Canada. The pattern was about 185 feet across.
FLYING TRIANGLES MAKE IMPRESSIVE DISPLAY IN ISRAEL
Israeli journalist Barry Chamish notes that major UFO events are most likely to occur in Israel on Jewish holy days, a fact for which there is no explanation. In a recent instance, on the fasting day called Tisha B'av on July 22, Israeli ufologists were able to coordinate the tracking and videotaping of a large triangle UFO as it moved scores of miles over several major cities and was viewed by hundreds of witnesses. Video of that UFO, shot by Professor Rami Shkalim of Bar Ilan University, was shown on a popular morning TV news program, Good Morning Israel.
